چکیده

In reputation-based peer-to-peer systems, reputation is used to build trust between peers and help selecting the right peers to download from. In this paper, we argue that reputation should not be used for service differentiation among the peers. To provide the right incentives for peers to share files and contribute to the system, the new concept of Contribution Behavior is introduced for partially decentralized peerto-peer systems. Service differentiation is achieved based on the Contribution Behavior of the peers rather than their reputations. Simulation results assess the ability of the proposed algorithm to effectively identify free riders and malicious peers that upload malicious content, hence reducing the level of service provided to these peers and preserving network resources. On the other hand, good peers that contribute to the system receive better services which increases their satisfaction significantly.

Towards Trustworthy Peer-To-Peer Environments: An Appraisal Analysis Approach

The recent and rapid development of P2P systems is paving the way for a distinguished manner of computing where autonomy and decentralization are the foundation of success. In this paper, we focus on the problem of free riding in decentralized collaborative environments. We propose a novel free riders filtering algorithm based on trustworthiness. Existing, literature does not consider trustwort...

Cooperative learning and peer evaluation: The effect of free riders on team performance and the relationship between course performance and peer evaluation

Cooperative learning has gained popularity in higher educational settings. However, assigning grades equitably to all team members in a way that rewards them for their contributions remains challenging. In this paper, we ask whether having free riders on a team lowers the quality of submitted work, and whether students’ course performance correlates with peer evaluations. In an introductory soc...

Controlling Free Riding using Extended Point Based Incentive Mechanism in Peer-to-Peer Networks

Over the years of the emergence of peer-to-peer systems a phenomenon named ‘Free Riding’ has affected its performance and become a serious threat to be resolved. Free riding phenomenon was first felt in the study of Gnutella. As the number of free riders increases, the performance of the overall system decreases as free riders use resources without giving anything to the system. To solve the pr...

Indirect Reciprocity in Contributions to a Peer-to-Peer Music Sharing Network - An Empirical Analysis of Individual Level Data

This study assesses the influence of indirect reciprocity on individual contribution to a peer-topeer network. We find that individuals’ level of contributions increases with number of contributors in the peer-to-peer network but decrease with number of free riders in the networks, indicating that individual contributions are reciprocal in nature. Moreover, we show that individuals have strong ...

Counteracting free riding in Peer-to-Peer networks

The existence of a high degree of free riding is a serious threat to Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks. In this paper, we propose a distributed framework to reduce the adverse effects of free riding on P2P networks. Our solution primarily focuses on locating free riders and taking actions against them. We propose a framework in which each peer monitors its neighbors, decides if they are free riders, ...
